MTO-licensed safety inspections for used-vehicle sales and re-registration. A thorough check against Ontario’s official standard, with a straight pass or a detailed report on exactly what needs to be fixed to get there.
What the inspection covers
The Ontario Safety Standards Certificate follows a fixed checklist. Here’s what’s included.
Our Safety Standard inspection process
Book your inspection
We schedule your vehicle in for the official MTO checklist inspection โ no waiting weeks for an appointment.
Complete the checklist
Every item on the Ontario Safety Standards Certificate checklist is inspected in the order the standard requires.
Record every item
Each component is marked as pass or fail against the defined criteria โ nothing is estimated or skipped.
Issue your result
If the vehicle passes, you receive your Safety Standards Certificate. If it doesn’t, you receive a detailed report of every fail item.
Repair & re-test
We quote the repairs needed to pass, and once complete, re-test against only the items that failed.
A failed item doesn’t always mean a major repair
One of the biggest misconceptions about a failed safety inspection is assuming the whole vehicle needs work. Often it’s something specific โ a worn wiper blade, a cracked windshield, a burnt-out bulb, or brake pads below the required thickness โ and only that item stands between the vehicle and a pass.
We give you the exact fail items, not a vague estimate.
Common reasons a vehicle fails
Most fail items are straightforward to fix. Knowing exactly which one applies is the whole point of the report.
Worn brake pads or rotors
Pads or rotors below the minimum thickness set by the standard.
Tires below tread limit
Tread depth under the legal minimum, or visible sidewall damage.
Cracked or chipped windshield
Damage within the driver’s field of view can be an automatic fail.
Non-functioning lights
A burnt-out headlight, signal, or brake light bulb is a common, quick fix.
Rust perforation
Corrosion through structural body panels or frame components.
Suspension or steering wear
Worn ball joints, tie rods, or bushings beyond allowable play.
Selling, buying, or re-registering a vehicle?
A Safety Standards Certificate is valid for 36 days from the inspection date and is required when transferring ownership of a used vehicle in Ontario, or re-registering a vehicle after certain lapses. Timing the inspection close to your sale or registration date avoids it expiring before you need it.
If your certificate has already expired, we can re-test and issue a new one.
